A Quick Immersion
Library of Congress Control Number: 978-1-949845-40-2
Adopting a feminist materialism and more-than-human focus allows us (humans) to imagine more about the possibilities of education for the present and the future without forgetting the past. In a few short pages, Education: A Quick Immersion, explores elements of education through chapters that grapple with questions related to learning, teaching, curriculum and material. It invites readers to imagine how practical, equitable, inclusive and joyful education could be if we just decentered humans and listened to, and allowed ourselves to be taught by, the world; acknowledged the agency of the world and everything in it; and challenged some taken-for-granted beliefs masquerading as truths about learning and teaching.
Catherine Milne’s first foray into higher education resulted in her burning her lecture notes as she headed off to teach high school science for more years than she wants to admit. Now a Professor of Education at New York University she works to create learning experiences that decenter students for the sake of the world while supporting students to find joy, wonder, and build practice. She has authored books such as Education: A Quick Immersion to get the word out and collaborated with colleagues on books including Teacher Educators Rethink Self-Assessment: A Guide for the Perplexed (2014).
“In this visionary work, Dr. Catherine Milne invites us into an entangled world where education becomes a site of feminist inquiry, relational ethics, and quantum possibility. Thinking with feminist theorists such as Barad and Haraway, she challenges the dominance of human-centered epistemologies and instead offers agential reality as a dynamic ecology where the relationships and interactions of all “vibrant matter” are considered and centered in education. Her use of metaphor, personal narrative, and quantum physics is not just evocative—it’s pedagogical. This is a book that doesn’t just theorize transformation; it enacts it. This is a novel text for educators who desire inspiration for transformative possibilities in their work.”
